Art and Design at Camestone

Welcome to the Camestone School art and design page. Here you will find information about art at Camestone, detailing the content taught in each year group and the progression of artistic understanding throughout a child’s time with us. We follow the Kapow scheme of work and build upon key knowledge of drawing, painting, sculpture and craft techniques.

Children have the opportunity to develop their artistic skills year on year, experimenting with various media to express their creativity. This is further enriched through gallery visits, workshops with visiting artists and community art projects, which enhance our core curriculum offer. Families are also invited to share in their children's creative achievements through regular displays around the school.

Every child at Camestone maintains an active sketchbook throughout the year, giving them the invaluable experience of recording ideas, experimenting with techniques and developing original artwork. We also hold an annual whole-school art exhibition, providing a platform to celebrate creative achievements with our school community.

What is Art and Design?

Art and Design is the exploration of visual expression, enabling individuals to communicate thoughts, feelings and ideas using color, form and texture.

• To generate ideas — understanding how to research, experiment and sketch to develop unique artistic concepts.

• To master techniques — appreciating how to use tools and materials effectively across drawing, painting and sculpture.

• To evaluate — recognizing how to critically review, refine and adapt creative work as it develops.

• To contextualise — identifying the cultural and historical significance of diverse artists, craftmakers and designers.

Each year, children become more skilled in these key concepts, building upon their prior knowledge and deepening their understanding. Our intention is that by the time they leave us in Year 6, pupils will:

• Produce creative work confidently, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences in personal sketchbooks.

• Demonstrate proficiency in a range of artistic techniques, including drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking.

• Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.

• Speak knowledgeably about great artists, architects and designers from history and modern contemporary culture.
