Welcome to the Camestone School science page. Here you will find information about science at Camestone, detailing the content taught in each year group and the progression of scientific understanding throughout a child’s time with us. We follow the Kapow scheme of work and build upon key knowledge of biology, chemistry and physics.
Children have the opportunity to develop their scientific skills year on year, asking questions and testing ideas through practical enquiry. This is further enriched through interactive experiments, outdoor learning in our school grounds and visiting STEM workshops, which enhance our core curriculum offer. Families are also supported with practical activities to try at home, encouraging curiosity about the natural world.
Every child at Camestone participates in hands-on practical investigations throughout the year, giving them the invaluable experience of predicting, testing and drawing conclusions. We also celebrate national initiatives, such as British Science Week, fostering a lifelong passion for discovery and innovation.
Science is the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation, experimentation and evidence.
To investigate — understanding how to plan, set up and carry out fair tests to answer scientific questions.
To observe — appreciating how to make accurate measurements and systematic observations over time.
To record — recognising how to collect, organize and present data using tables, charts and scientific diagrams.
To explain — identifying patterns, drawing conclusions and using scientific evidence to justify ideas.
Each year, children become more skilled in these key concepts, building upon their prior knowledge and deepening their understanding. Our intention is that by the time they leave us in Year 6, pupils will:
Ask relevant questions and select the most appropriate type of scientific enquiry to answer them.
Plan and carry out controlled investigations, identifying variables and choosing precise equipment.
Analyse data to draw valid conclusions, identifying causal relationships and inconsistencies in results.
Use accurate scientific vocabulary to explain physical processes, living systems and chemical changes.
