Music at Camestone School

Welcome to the Camestone School music page. Here you will find information about music at Camestone, detailing the content taught in each year group and the progression of musical understanding throughout a child’s time with us. We follow the Kapow scheme of study and build upon key knowledge of musical styles, structure and composition.

Children have the opportunity to develop their musicianship year on year and are also offered the chance to learn an instrument for free as part of our curriculum. This is further enriched through Bedfordshire Music Service, who work with us to enhance our curriculum offer. Families may also choose to access RockSteady lessons, a paid in‑school programme where children learn to perform as part of their own rock band.

Every child at Camestone also takes to the stage at least once a year, giving them the invaluable experience of performing live and celebrating their musical achievements with our school community. We also have an active school choir that perform at local events and attend Young Voices. 

What is Music?

Music is the study of sound that is organised using rhythm, melody or harmony.

• To perform — understanding that music is created to be shared and performed.

• To compare — appreciating that music is created through processes involving a range of techniques.

• To transcribe — recognising that compositions need to be communicated clearly using musical language and notation.

• To describe music — identifying and evaluating the features and effectiveness of musical elements.

Each year, children become more skilled in these key concepts, building upon their prior knowledge and deepening their understanding. Our intention is that by the time they leave us in Year 6, pupils will:

• Perform confidently as part of a small group using both voice and tuned instruments.

•  Make informed choices about structure, flow and expression when composing.

• Use basic notation to record their musical ideas on paper or through technology.

• Talk confidently when appraising music, using accurate and expressive musical vocabulary.
