Welcome to the Camestone School physical education page. Here you will find information about PE at Camestone, detailing the content taught in each year group and the progression of physical literacy, movement, and sporting competence throughout a child’s time with us. We deliver a comprehensive PE curriculum tailored to develop pupils' physical fitness, agility, teamwork, and healthy lifestyle choices.
Children have the opportunity to develop their athletic and game skills year on year. As a special highlight of our offer, we bring a temporary swimming pool into school for three weeks every year, where every child in the school gets the invaluable opportunity to swim. This intensive swimming programme is fully funded by the school, ensuring there is no cost to parents or carers. This is further enriched through our active partnership with the Bedford Schools Sport Partnership, where our pupils participate in regular sports festivals, competitive fixtures, and inter-school tournaments.
Every child at Camestone takes part in intra-school competitions, sports days, and active outdoor challenges throughout the year, giving them the opportunity to experience the joy of physical activity and celebrate personal and team success. We also run active after-school clubs to foster a lifelong passion for sport and healthy living.
Physical Education is the study and practice of physical movement, fitness, health, and sporting competence, encouraging lifelong participation in active, healthy lifestyles.
To master movement — understanding and developing agility, balance, coordination, and fundamental motor skills across sports and physical activities.
To apply tactics — appreciating how to use strategies, rules, and cooperative teamwork in competitive games and physical challenges.
To perform creatively — recognizing how body movements can be expressed, sequenced, and evaluated in dance, gymnastics, and routine routines.
To sustain health — identifying the importance of physical fitness, personal safety, stamina, and water confidence for lifelong health.
Each year, children become more skilled in these key concepts, building upon their prior knowledge and deepening their understanding. Our intention is that by the time they leave us in Year 6, pupils will:
Swim competently, confidently, and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres using a range of strokes.
Apply principles of attack, defence, and team strategy across a variety of competitive sports and games.
Evaluate and refine their own and others' physical performances to achieve personal bests.
Demonstrate fairness, respect, leadership, and a commitment to maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle.
