RE at Camestone 

Welcome to the Camestone School Religious Education page. Here you will find information about RE at Camestone, detailing the content taught in each year group and the progression of religious and worldviews understanding throughout a child’s time with us. We follow the Kapow scheme of work alongside the Bedford Borough SACRE agreed syllabus, building upon key knowledge of diverse religions, non-religious worldviews, beliefs and values.

Children have the opportunity to develop their understanding of worldviews year on year, reflecting on big questions of meaning, purpose and morality. This is further enriched through visits to local places of worship, visitor talks from faith representatives and cultural celebrations, which enhance our core curriculum offer. Families are also invited to share their own traditions and heritage, celebrating the rich diversity of our school community.

Every child at Camestone engages in reflective discussions, philosophical inquiry and creative projects throughout the year, giving them the invaluable experience of exploring diverse beliefs and articulating their own values. We also mark key religious festivals throughout the school calendar, fostering a culture of mutual respect, empathy and inclusion.

What is Religious Education?

Religious Education is the study of human beliefs, worldviews, values and traditions, exploring how people find meaning in life and express their faith in the modern world.

• To make sense of beliefs — understanding core concepts, teachings and sacred texts of principal religions and worldviews.

• To understand impact — appreciating how beliefs influence daily lives, practices, values and express enterprise and community actions.

• To connect ideas — recognizing connections between different beliefs, personal values and wider ethical issues.

• To reflect and evaluate — identifying and expressing personal reflections, thoughtful responses and respectful opinions on big questions.

Each year, children become more skilled in these key concepts, building upon their prior knowledge and deepening their understanding. Our intention is that by the time they leave us in Year 6, pupils will:

• Explain the core beliefs, practices and symbols of major world religions (including Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism) and non-religious worldviews such as Humanism.

• Express balanced, well-reasoned views on ethical, moral and philosophical questions with confidence and sensitivity.

• Understand the diversity within religions and how faith and belief shape individual identity and global communities.

• Demonstrate tolerance, empathy and respect when engaging with beliefs and worldviews different from their own.
