French at Camestone

Welcome to the Camestone School French page. Here you will find information about French at Camestone, detailing the content taught in Key Stage 2 and the progression of linguistic understanding throughout a child’s time with us. We follow the Kapow scheme of study and build upon key knowledge of French vocabulary, phonics, grammar, and intercultural understanding.

Children have the opportunity to develop their language skills year on year, building confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in French. This is further enriched through authentic cultural activities, songs, role-play, and international theme days, which enhance our core curriculum offer. Families are also supported with resources and key phrases to celebrate language learning at home.

Every child at Camestone engages in interactive language activities throughout Key Stage 2, giving them the invaluable experience of communicating in a second language and celebrating global cultures. We also commemorate events such as European Day of Languages, fostering curiosity about the wider world.

What is French?

French is the study of the French language and culture, empowering children to communicate effectively across spoken and written forms in an interconnected world.

• To listen and speak — understanding spoken French and expressing ideas, conversations, and feelings verbally with clear pronunciation.

• To read and comprehend — appreciating written French texts, stories, and information by recognising key words and sentence structures.

• To write and compose — recognizing how to construct sentences, short paragraphs, and written responses using accurate grammar and vocabulary.

• To appreciate culture — identifying and respecting cultural differences, traditions, and geography across Francophone countries worldwide.

Each year, children become more skilled in these key concepts, building upon their prior knowledge and deepening their understanding. Our intention is that by the time they leave us in Year 6, pupils will:

• Engage in purposeful conversations in French, asking and answering questions with appropriate pronunciation and intonation.

• Read and understand main points and simple details in short, authentic French passages.

• Write short texts from memory and adapt model sentences to express personal opinions and descriptions.

• Demonstrate an enthusiastic awareness of French culture and an open-minded appreciation of foreign languages.
