History at Camestone

Welcome to the Camestone School history page. Here you will find information about history at Camestone, detailing the content taught in each year group and the progression of historical understanding throughout a child’s time with us. We follow the Kapow scheme of work and build upon key knowledge of chronological eras, historical events and influential figures.

Children have the opportunity to develop their historical enquiry skills year on year, investigating how past events shape our world today. This is further enriched through museum trips, handling real artifacts and historical dress-up days, which enhance our core curriculum offer. Families are also invited to share family heritage stories, enriching our understanding of local history.

Every child at Camestone steps into the past through immersive history days and project work throughout the year, giving them the invaluable experience of analyzing primary sources and debating historical perspectives. We also commemorate key historical events, building an appreciation for shared human history.

What is History?

History is the study of past events, societies and people, using evidence to understand how human experiences have changed over time.

• To sequence — understanding how to place historical periods, events and changes in chronological order.

• To enquire — appreciating how to ask perceptive questions and analyze primary and secondary sources.

• To evaluate cause — recognizing why significant events happened and assessing their short- and long-term impacts.

• To interpret perspectives — identifying how different people experienced and recorded historical events.

Each year, children become more skilled in these key concepts, building upon their prior knowledge and deepening their understanding. Our intention is that by the time they leave us in Year 6, pupils will:

• Construct clear chronological narratives across local, national and global histories.

• Evaluate a range of historical sources, understanding that evidence can be interpreted in different ways.

• Identify continuity, change, cause and consequence across different time periods and civilizations.

• Speak confidently about key historical concepts such as monarchy, empire, democracy and social change.
